J. S. Bach:
Air on the G String
6kb
|
Despite its racy-sounding title, this pensive,
soothing music was taken from Bach's 3rd Orchestral Suite in D. It
got its unfortunate popular title when violinist A. E. Wilhelmj
(1845-1908) rearranged it in the key of C (the melody a 9th lower than the
original and w/piano accompaniment) in order to take advantage of the
violin's rich-sounding lowest (G) string for the melody. Forms 1
page of sheet music for the guitar.

|
Prelude in C 6kb
|
Widely known as the first prelude in the
"Well-Tempered Clavier," this tune was composed as a study in
harmonic movement, and was included in the Second Anna Magdalena Bach
Notebook. In addition to being very well-liked by all, it is an
excellent basis for lessons in natural harmonic movement. Forms 2
pages of guitar sheet music.

Jesu,
Joy of Man's Desiring 8kb
|
This very well-recognized music was used twice
in Cantata 147, as a closing anthem. Known originally as the German
hymn, "Werde Munter, Mein Gemuthe" ("Be Glad, My
Soul"), Bach added the now better-known accompaniment in
triple-time. This is the first arrangement for guitar to completely
blend the original accompaniment with the hymn tune.

Lute
Prelude (BWV 999) 7kb
|
Most commonly heard on keyboard instruments
today. This prelude was written (at least, many suppose so) as an
intro to Bach's famous lute-fugue BWV 1000 (coming soon at cobblemead.com).
It seems this is true, for two reasons: First, because it contains
"repeat" elements which, if played with contrasting
accentuation, very much reflect those in several of the fugue's
episodes. That accentuation is written into this guitar
arrangement. Second, the prelude is unusual in that it begins in Dm
(Orig. Cm) and ends in the same key the fugue begins: Am (orig. Gm).
Like the WTC, this prelude is very instructive, harmonically. It
forms 2 pages of guitar sheet music.

|
2-Part
Invention #1 5kb
|
A very well-recognized piece, this tune makes an
excellent encore. It has been widely used as the theme music for a
number of television commercials. It forms 2 pages of guitar sheet
music.

|
Prelude
(Lute Suite #3 BWV 995) 28kb
|
This prelude/fugue combination is a masterpiece
of the true and stylistic prelude, and of the French "Style Brisé,"
or "broken style." Certain notes in the fugue, when
accented, bring out hidden melodies within the larger context. It is
a very good first major fugue for advanced guitar students. Forms 4
pages of guitar sheet music.
|
|
Gavotte
1 (Lute Suite #3) 8kb
|
The third lute suite is practically identically
to the 5th 'Cello suite, except that the rich harmonies come out more
distinctly in the lute version. This is the 5th movement. It's
1 page of guitar sheet music.
|
|
Gavotte
2 (Lute Suite #3) 6kb
|
This is the 6th movement of the suite.
Technically described as a "Double" ( Fr. for
"variation") it follows the previous tune, which then is
normally played once again, without repeats. This tune forms 1 page of
guitar sheet music.

Suite For Flute & Guitar BWV 1033, #1
|
|
Prelude
& Presto (Flute & Guitar) 10kb
|
Taken from Bach's BWV 1033, #1, originally for
Flute/Continuo. This arrangement takes
the liberty of elaborating the block-chording of the harpsichord into a
broken-style guitar continuo. This was done in an attempt to take
some of the edge off the somewhat somewhat-dreary flute part. The
Presto that follows has been left as close to the original as
possible. 2 pages of guitar and flute sheet music.

Courante for Flute/Guitar (by Nathan Griffith, after Bach,
20kb
|
We hope we won't be too roundly vilified and/or scorned
for taking the liberty of inserting a "missing movement" into
Bach's BWV 1033 #1 Flute/Continuo Suite. Most professional flautists
are familiar with the customary second movement, which follows
below. It is written very much in the style of the
"Doubles" of the violin sonatas, suggesting that there may have
once been a slower, more contrapuntal movement that preceded it.
This gentler, Courante-like movement is based entirely on the motifs
of the rapid movement that follows. It forms two pages of flute
& guitar sheet music.
|
|
Allegro (BWV 1033 #1) 26kb
|
Standard second movement of this suite. This
piece forms 2 pages of flute & guitar sheet music.

|
Adagio
(1st Half by Nathan Griffith, after Bach, 2nd Half, J.S.Bach, Suite, Fl. &
Gtr.,BWV 1033 #1) 8kb
|
Again, liberties have been taken with this
music. The original, a very beautiful slow movement, seemed to be
over with way too soon. So a slow but teasingly lighthearted
"first half" was added, based entirely on the motives of the
original movement. The entirety of Bach's original is here; it just
begins at the midpoint of this midi file and of the sheet music, which for
flute and guitar is 4 pages.
|
|
Minuet
1 & 2 BWV 1033 #1) 19kb
|
These final movements of the suite are in the
form of a minuet and its "double" (see above). These
movements for flute and guitar form 2 pages of sheet music.

Jingle
Bells 6kb

Everybody knows J. Pierpont wrote this tune, not
"Christmas." It's actually not even a Christmas tune, but
a winter song. This jaunty arrangement is a favorite wherever it's
played. It's 1 page of guitar sheet music.

Trio #1 (Flute Oboe & Guitar) 53kb
|
The original, which was scored for 2 flutes and
'cello, sounded too threadbare when guitar replaces the 'cello, so the
harmony was filled out. In addition, in replacing one flute with
oboe, problems with range and timbre necessitated switching parts.
Flautists familiar with the first flute part may be in for a surprise if
they attempt to play this arrangement solely from memory. Sheet
music, full score, is 7pp, separate wind parts also available: Flute, 4pp;
Oboe, 4pp.
